RUSSIAN CUP M: Bad start, good finish – Zenit grab ticket to next stage

European champions Zenit Kazan had to do their best in the preliminary round of the Russian Cup to advance to the next stage.

After suffering two defeats at start of pool stage, Russian Championship and Cup title holders got serious and, despite lacking foreign and Russia NT players, achieved two wins in a row. Last one and also the last in the preliminary round has brough Zenit a qualification to the next stage as third ranked in their pool which was played in Nizhnevartovsk – Zenit – Prikamie Perm (Division 2 team) 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-22).

Belogorie were more successful, finishing as leaders in their pool (played in Grozny) with 4-0 record. In the last round, they beat Division 2 team Kristall Voronezh 3-1 (25-27, 25-21, 25-15, 25-18).

Practically all major favorites advanced to the next stage: Dinamo Moscow (4-0), Lokomotiv Novosibirsk (3-0), Kuzbass Kemerovo (3-1)…

Next stage of the Russian Cup will be played from September 18 to September 22.
