The Algerian referee Mohamed Lazreug had a tear in his eye as he started whistling the fifth place classification match between Iran and Turkey at the FIVB Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship in Ankara. This was his last international FIVB game as a referee and immediately before its start he was publicly honoured by Turkish Volleyball Federation President Ozkan Mutlugil and FIVB Referee Delegate Sergey Titov, who thanked him for his many tears of service.

Mohamed Lazreug has worked as a referee for the last 17 years. In September the Algerian referee will turn 55 which is the statutory limit for this job.  He started his career in volleyball as a player and only much later he became a federal and then an international referee.

”I grew up in a small town, Hassi Mameche in Algeria, and there was only one sport in my city. It was volleyball so I started to play volleyball,” Lazreug remembers.

In 1985 he became a regional referee. Ten years later he passed the course for international referees in Egypt and started his international career in 1998. He has refereed at six FIVB World Championships and at several African tournaments.

”I am very happy to have such a career and to be at this U21 World Championship now,” Mohamed Lazreug says. ”It is bit sad that it is over, but I will certainly not stay away from volleyball refereeing.  I will continue to work for the referee commission of the Algerian federation and to help young Algerian referees become good international referees.”
