After Javier Weber ended his contract as national team’s coach, managers, journalists and all the people interested in Argentine volleyball started to look for his successor. When the name of Julio Velasco was pronounced, the Iranian Federation rapidly announced they had an agreement until the World Championship.

Moreover, the fans joined around 23 thousand ‘Likes’ in the Facebook fan page ‘We want Velasco to remain as Iran’s coach’, in order to let everybody know that they didn’t want him to leave. Nevertheless, they couldn’t retain the trainer who finished his contract and will be presented officially on February 19th in Buenos Aires, as an Argentine newspaper said. ‘The decision will be confirmed between Friday and Saturday’, the journalist Fernando Czyz wrote on his Twitter account.

Velasco was Italy’s men’s coach between 1989 and 1996. With them he won the FIVB World Championship twice, three times the European Championship, the World League on five occasions and the silver medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics Games. With Iran, he put them into the best of volleyball: they were the surprise of the World League in 2013 and now they are 12th in the FIVB’s ranking.

The contract with the Asian team was all that hampered the 62 years old man. However, he finished that agreement and will sign a contract with Argentina. As ‘Canchallena’ explained, he will travel to Tehran to the presentation of the new Iranian coach, Lorenzo Bernardi, and then will arrive at his country to continue with other commitments.

As detailed Czyz to a local media, Velasco’s assistants will be Camilo Soto and Martin Lopez. Till the date, Juan Manuel Cichello is not confirmed to be part of the coaching staff, but is among the new coach’s preferences.
