USA held off the Russian team in their 2014 FIVB World League match on Friday as the Pool B’s leaders beat the hosts 2-3 (18-25, 19-25, 27-25, 25-19, 19-21) in SK Yantarny, in front of 7000 spectators.
Matthew Anderson topped the scorers with 36 points. Dmitriy Muserskiy and Nikolay Pavlov led the home side with 19 points.
The win means USA stay on the top of Pool B with 21 points, while Russia improved their record to 15 points.
USA captain Sean Rooney: “It is always dangerous to give Russia any opportunity. We did and we lost the third and fourth sets. Nevertheless we managed to keep the pace and we achieved an excellent result.”
Russia captain Sergey Makarov: “It’s a shame we lost today. In spite the fact that the US had a solid advantage, we had a chance to win the match, but we missed it.”
