The player’s ranking system in the Brazilian Women’s Volleyball Championship, that’s considered controversial and notorious, ceased to exist. A result of voting that was held last week was to maintain the system of ranking players for the 2020/21 season, but after that, the clubs got together again, held a new vote with a new outcome: the end of the ranking.

Because of the pandemic of the new coronavirus (COVID-19), the meeting was held by video-conference. There was a shadow of controversy over last week’s meeting as two clubs (São Paulo FC/Barueri and Curitiba Vôlei) were unable to participate in person and sent their votes by email to the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV). These two votes were favorable to end the ranking but were discarded, so the result of the vote of 5 to 4 maintained the ranking of players.

After many complaints from players and fans, the CBV was forced to schedule a new meeting, this time via video-conference, so that there’s would be no expenses for new trips for the teams and to respect the social isolation because of fighting the coronavirus. In the new vote, the result was 7 to 4 for the end of the ranking system.

The ranking of players was implemented in the 1992/93 season, with the aim of generating a balance between the teams participating in the competition. Players had worth from zero to seven points. Each year, the women’s ranking was the target of criticism from players, who ask for it to end, especially for limiting the transfer market to seven-point players (usually Olympic champions), practically forcing many of them to go and play abroad. In the Men’s Superliga, the ranking was canceled prior to the current season.
