With his appointment as Brazil’s men’s Under-21 coach, Giovane Gavio has moved from the administrative side of volleyball back to the competition side.
The double Olympic champion (Barcelona 1992 and Athens 2004) took office at the end of the Rio Olympic Games, where he was the Competition Manager for the volleyball.
“I received the invitation from the CBV [Brazilian Volleyball Federation] with great joy,” Giovane said. “It is an honour to have the opportunity to return to the Brazilian national team. This is an environment in which I was very happy and had many achievements, but now I have a nice responsibility to contribute. One of things I know from being inside the Brazilian team was learning to serve, and the feeling I have now is that I am here to serve, to share a bit of my story with them.”
Giovane’s first major competition will be next month’s South American Championship in Bariloche, Argentina. Also at stake will be a spot in the 2017 World Championship.
“I think the biggest contribution I can give [the players] is to inspire them, encourage them to work, get the best out of them and understand what wearing the shirt means,” Giovane said. “They need to understand that they have a responsibility to the Brazilian national team shirt and, above all, a responsibility to continue the legacy of previous generations. This requires a lot of love and dedication, and the team is very eager to work and seek new knowledge. I’m really enthusiastic about everything.”
