The website covering technology news Bleeping Computer published an article that pretty much embarrassed the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV).
Namely, numerous identity documents such as passports and licenses of volleyball players and affiliated journalists who had uploaded them for accreditation to various events have been made public since November 2020 without their knowledge. These sensitive documents were exposed on a publicly accessible cloud storage bucket, containing hundreds of image scans showing passports and documents belonging to players and journalists around the world. Some of those players, even though there are no names specified, are well-known European players.
These IDs were hosted on a Microsoft Azure blob storage share. As Bleeping Computer further investigated the case, it turned out that the source of the leak was CEV. Although the governing body of volleyball in the Old Continent has its own online accreditation system, the Media Club accreditation system, which enables media representatives and journalists to register and upload their identity documents for verification, the storage bucked was undoubtedly linked to the CEV, the same source reported and stressed they tried to contact CEV on several occasions but didn’t get the answer until yesterday, February 2. That’s when the CEV spokesman indirectly confirmed the error of the organization he works for, saying that “the server is now secure, and we are working internally and with our processor to improve on the security of personal data in all the tools we use”.
The exposed bucket has been secured a few days back and all the links within the folders containing sensitive identity documents are no longer accessible.
