VNL 2019 M: USA score first win, using their setter as outside hitter; “Seleção” down Pool 3 hosts Poland in 4 sets

The U.S. national team achieved their first win in the 2019 FIVB Men’s Volleyball Nations League – Preliminary Round.

In Pool 3 in Katowice, Poland, the national team of the United States beat Australia (0-3 record) on Day 3 after losing an opening set, partially 19-25, 27-25, 25-16, and 25-16. Thus, the USA will travel to Ufa, Russia, for the second week of the tournament with a 1-2 record. The U.S. head coach John Speraw introduced his third different lineup in Week 1. Interestingly, he used Micah Ma’a as an outside hitter although the UCLA Bruins player has been registered on the roster as a setter. His versatility as either being able to be used as an outside hitter or a setter is already known from his NCAA games.

Taylor Sander top-scored for the USA with 19 points. Lincoln Alexander Williams notched 12 points for the “Volleyroos”.

Brazil finished the first week by keeping an unbeaten record. After beating the United States (3-0) and Australia (3-2), the “Seleção” faced the toughest opponents so far, Pool 3 hosts Poland, in Katowice. And, in the fight between the 2016 Rio Olympics champions and current world champions, the firstly mentioned side prevailed 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-17).

Led by Ricardo Lucarelli (17 points), Cuban-born Yoandy Leal (15), who made his debut for Brazil yesterday, and Lucas Saatkamp (4 kill blocks), the “Seleção” inflicted a first defeat to Poland in the tournament. Artur Szalpuk scored 15 points for Poland who are at 2-1.

Argentina – Canada 1-3 (21-25, 27-29, 25-16, 24-26)

Pool 3 (Katowice, Poland):

Australia – USA 1-3 (25-19, 25-27, 16-25, 16-25)

Brazil – Poland 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-17)

Pool 4 (Novi Sad, Serbia):

Japan – France 1-3 (22-25, 27-25, 19-25, 15-25)

Russia – Serbia 3-2 (20-25, 26-24, 25-23, 22-25, 15-10)
