The fifth set of the last match on Round 1’s schedule of the 2022-23 Italian Men’s Volleyball Championship last night set the new competition record.
The fifth set of the match between Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza and WithU Verona is the longest tie-break in the history of SuperLega and Italian club volleyball in general. With a score of 24-22 for Verona and 36 minutes in duration, this set went down in the history of the Italian top flight in the era of the rally point system. This duration also includes the technical break (with related long protests from the Piacenza side in regard to the last point that went to Verona) which took place for the consultation of the video check and recording of the complaint presented by the home team.
Yesterday’s tie-break surpassed the record-breaking fifth set of last April (35 minutes), which was also staged at PalaBanca and also ended with the score of 24-22, but for the hosts. Back then, Piacenza took the set and match against Trentino in Game 2 of the playoff quarter-finals.
