The 2019/20 Super League will be played in a different format compared to previous seasons. The tournament is also shortened comparing to several seasons back. According to the new competition system, the first stage (round-robin) consists of four pools. The two pools consist of three teams each and two pools of four teams each. The first two teams from each pool will enter the second stage (round-robin) in which two new pools of four teams each will be formed. The play-off semi-finals and finals will follow this stage.
Out of six games that were played in the opening round, five ended win straight sets. Interestingly, the two best teams last season, champions Beijing and runners-up Tianjin did not make their debut in the new season yet.
Despite just being returned from the Military World Games, in which they represented China in the female volleyball tournament, Bayi swept Fujian by a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-19). Liu Yanhan top-scored for the team based in Nanchang with 18 points.
The Russian superstar Tatyana Kosheleva made her debut for Guangdong but did not leave an impressive impression in the 3-0 win of her team over Henan: 8 points (40% attack, 8/20).
The foreign duo Lippmann – Larson led Shanghai against Hebei (3-0). German player scored 19 while American international made 15 points.
In the most intense duel of the first round, Liaoning downed Yunnan by a 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-12, 25-13) mostly thanks to a superb display of Azerbaijani Natalya Mammadova. She put down 22 points, including 5 aces. Wang Yimei served 7 aces, while Yan Ni made 5 kill blocks.
