USA M: Speraw calls 19 players for VNL

The USA men's team is preparing for the 2021 FIVB Volleyball Nations League (VNL) which will be held in a secure “bubble” in Rimini (ITA) with no fans for the health and safety of all participants.

USA head coach John Speraw released a list of 19 players for the VNL tournament. Fourteen players from the long roster will be selected for each three-day preliminary round segment.

In previous editions, USA team finished on the VNL podium in both years,  2019 (silver) and 2018 (bronze). The 2020 edition was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Setters: Kawika Shoji, Micah Christenson, Josh Tuaniga

Outside hitters: Taylor Sander, T.J. Defalco, Brenden Sander, Thomas Jaeschke

Opposites: Matt Anderson, Kyle Ensing, Ben Patch, Jake Hanes

Midle blockers: David Smith, Taylor Averill, Garrett Maugututia, Max Holt, Mitch Stahl, Jeff Jendryk

Liberos: Dustin Watten, Erik Shoji

Head coach: John Speraw

This year’s VNL will be the only official international competition of the USA men’s national team ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, which begin on July 24th.

May 28: USA vs Canada
May 29: USA vs Brazil
May 30: USA vs Argentina

June 3: Russia vs USA
June 4: Poland vs USA
June 5: USA vs Australia

June 9: Iran vs USA
June 10: Germany vs USA
June 8: USA vs Serbia

June 15: Italy vs USA
June 16: USA vs France
June 17: Netherlands vs USA

June 21: Slovenia vs USA
June 22: Bulgaria vs USA
June 23: USA vs Japan

June 26: Semifinals 1 and 2
June 27: Bronze and Gold medal matches 

The competition starts on May 25 in Rimini with the participation of 16 women’s and 16 men’s teams.

The VNL kicks off with a women’s event on May 25 when the Netherlands will face Belgium in the first of a total of 248 games for both genders in more than a month.

The men’s competition in Rimini starts on May 28 when France will play vs. Bulgaria in the opening match.

The women’s semifinals are scheduled for June 24, and medal matches follow on June 25. The men’s competition culminates with a semifinal on June 26 and two medal matches on June 27.
