During the previous Olympic Games quadrennial, Xie was the assistant coach of the Chinese men’s national team, assisting the coach Zhou Jianan, who resigned after the failure to qualify for the London Olympic Games. Xie Guochen later acted as the temporary coach and led the China team to their 3rd AVC Cup, which was the only title for the Chinese men’s team during the previous Olympic Games quadrennial.

Xie admitted that, the aim of the Chinese men’s team in the following quadrennial period is to ontain a ticket for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. The biggest challenge now, in his eyes, is to enhance the team’s confidence, which has faltered due to the previous unsatisfying results. “We have to improve the player’s technical and tactical abilities based on the training,” he said. “Attention must be paid to accomplish the goal of each match.”

I am familiar with my team and my athletes. We shall talk less but do more. Each member should act his role in this team. And we shall play more aggressively and dominantly.

The Chinese men’s team has only qualified for the Olympic Games twice in 1984 as the “replacement” and in 2008 as the host. And it has been 14 years until they were last crowned as Asian champions. But Xie is very confident with his coaching career after the appointment.

In Asian, China still ranks in the 1st group together with Japan, Iran, Korea and Australia. We have a chance and we must strive to be the No. 1 in Asia so as to qualify for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

Xie will resign as coach of Henan Tianguan men’s volleyball team in order to focus on the national side, for which the first squad will be named on Sunday.
