The team is being coached by legendary volleyball and beach volleyball player, Karch Kiraly who also led the senior women’s squad that won the gold medal at the Visit Omaha Norceca Continental Championship in Nebraska in September.
Kiraly will be assisted by Reed Sunahara, who in 2012 won two international titles with two different squads – the Senior’s Pan Am Cup in Ciudad Juarez and the Girls U18 Continental Title in Tijuana – in less than one month.
Kiraly’s and Sunahara’s collaboration has reaped good results in little more than a year. In 2013 Kiraly led his team to a win at the Women’s Pan American Cup in Peru with Sunahara as assistant. Together they also took their team to a win at the NORCECA Championship in Omaha, which helped the US clinch a berth at the FIVB Women’s Grand Champions Cup in November.
Volleyball fans in Baja California and around the area of the U.S-Mexico border will have the chance to see the U23 American unit playing with the 21 point test rule in Mexico.
Argentina, China and Dominican Republic are also holding minicamps at the Baja California High Performance Center in Tijuana.
The FIVB U23 World Championships Open for women is in its inaugural year and is in place to provide another opportunity for age-group players to participate in an international tournament with the goal of reducing the gap between age-group and senior level volleyball.
