US team was handling better at the start, establishing inititiave with powerful Anderson 8-5. Poland simply couldn’t find the rhythm and it was mostly visible on several service errors. Russell quickly put USA up front for unreachable 21-16 lead. Konarski’s spike that went wide on 17-24 exactly described how the Poles looked like in this set – totally unfocused – 17-25.
In Set 2 we’ve seen the other side of Polish national team, the side that led them to 8-0 score at the tournament. Kubiak sent two aces in a row and smashed very important ball for 8-6 at first TTO. Anderson’s play was fully annulled in this period 11-6. Now, USA was struggling to send serves in, while Bieniek and Kubiak did a huge job for their team 25-19. On 24-19 for Poland, there’s was the strangest challenge at the WC so far. Primary call by the main referee was that there was no touch by Polish block, but USA asked for a check. Video showed that there was no touch, but challenge system announced it was! After complainings from Polish players and staff (even some American players thought the system was wrong), the referees decided – NO TOUCH, set goes to Poland 25-19.
The players of US team seemed angry at the start of Set 3, easily getting 4-0 with two consecutive aces from Christenson! Just like in Set 1, Poland had a poor service. Probably the key moment occured on USA’s 11-8 lead when Mika blocked Anderson which started Polish run that ended with an equalizer 13-13. In the finish, Americans taimed Mika, but couldn’t do the same with Nowakowski who pushed his team to 2-1 lead in sets with a block-spike combination 25-23!
The fourth set was a one-way street that led to ultimate Polish victory since they gained a 4-0 lead. Despite having problem in serving, Poland kept momentum and had a monstrous 6-1 run at 6-3 lead (12-4)! Kubiak and Bieniek poured aces while American players just couldn’t hit any part of opponent’s field from the attack 25-15.
Top scorers: Michał Kubiak 17 points in Poland, Matt Anderson and Aaron Russell 12 each in USA.
