Media reported that Russia Men’s NT head coach Vladimir Alekno already decided to leave the bench, but he denied it. The President of the Russian Volleyball Federation, Stanislav Shevchenko, emphasized that this body will make a decision on Alekno’s future in the Russian NT on the Presidium on September 23.
“Alekno could not officially leave. The Presidium would need to accept his resignation. We can say it is official only after it. But, there was no conversation with him on the topic,” Shevchenko said to “R-Sport”.
Under the leadership of Alekno, “Zbornaya” took fourth place at the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro and the contract with him was designed until the end of the tournament.
Unlike Alekno, the issue of the new head coach of Women’s National Team of Russia will not be discussed in upcoming Presidium.
“The question about the new head coach will not be raised at the Presidium. We can discuss on the future of Marichev as head coach but it is unlikely we will nominate someone else on the Presidium,” Russia Women’s NT supervisor Vladislav Fadeev stated.
He added that Presidum will rather focus on assessing the performance of the team at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
With Marichev at the helm, Russian Women’s NT lost in the Rio quarterfinals to Serbia and left the Games without a medal. Marichev said he was willing to take the blame for the failure while, earlier, media wrote that he has already resigned as head coach.

I have a great respect to work and a type of coaching of V. Alekno. I suppose it would be mistake to take a fourth place on OG as a failure, taken into account very special circumstances and situation he/they had faced to. However, provided he would decide not to continue with NT from any reason, then I would like to mention one coach who could be perhaps a suitable candidate – Australian Mark Lebedew. Of course he does not have such information on all R. players as has V. Alekno. But on another hand he has something very unique – experience from several strong leagues /countries. Furthermore he seems to be open minded with a good communication ability. Anyway, I suppose, many foreign opponents would like to hire V. Alekno to run their NTs or the best clubs. Top volleyball federation officials want often to save their own skin to distract attention from their own failures. Change of coaches is such means. .It is not only in Russia…
What a mistake if they let alekno leaves the national team, especially, when their candidates are completely not comparable with alekno.
In his blog Mark writes all the right things about coaching and volleyball as science, but his gym and coaching is nothing like his writtings. He is more spectator than coach. True, he has ton of experince! With all the respect for coach Lebedew, Russian players will eat him alive, they have no respect for such coaches.
Alekno should take over Iran!
