A prominent Italian coach Giovanni Guidetti posted a highly interesting and instructive comment on Twitter that may serve as a little guide to young Volleyball players.

Guidetti, who is at the helm of Turkey Women’s national team and VakıfBank likes to share his coaching wisdom but also to comment on various Volleyball topics on Twitter. His words, whether he is criticizing or praising, always hit the core of the problem. This time, Guidetti commented on the success that Turkey Women’s U16 national team made in the 2019 EuroVolley by winning the gold medal.

“Congrats to the U16 Turkish team! Unfortunately, it’s not the first time that Turkey win big medals at a young level! The key is what will happen between 16 – 20 years old! Dear managers and families… in the next 4 years don’t put money in front of good training and playing in the court!” a 4-time CEV Champions League and 3-time FIVB Club World Championship winner wrote.

I am not sure why coach Guidetti would say that. That’s their livelihood they are playing at. National pride only lasts a short time then it’s back to work playing for a living. Vakifbank is a perfect example of paying big $$ for top players. Do they play for pride? Get real. Motivation is always money.

You didn’t get what he wanted to say. Turkey national teams are not top teams in the world. Men’s team is ranked 33, women’s is ranked 12, http://www.fivb.org/en/volleyball/Rankings.asp, despite having great national leagues.

His message means to warn young players not to be greedy and sign a contract just because of money if there will be no opportunity for development. There are plenty of examples when young players signed a contract and didn’t play at all, or didn’t have the opportunity to grow and become better. It was either too good team or a bad coach.

He doesn’t advocate playing for free, he advocates being patent and hone your skill so you can make more money later 🙂

Money is 80% motivation but as well housing, food, medical, security. Then this year money is not the issue as China, Japan as well as the other leagues are now thinking to start their leagues 3-4 months early so players may Rest before Olympics. If not for Olympics then money is 90% a factor.
