On Wednesday Belgium’s Schelde-Natie Precura ANTWERP claimed the return match scheduled for the 1/4 finals of the CEV Volleyball Cup but eventually lost the deciding golden set (14-16) to Turkey’s Maliye Milli Piyango ANKARA that hence pocketed a spot for the Challenge Round coming up in January. After losing 1:3 last week in Turkey, the Belgians needed to score a home win and claim also the golden set to prolong their European adventure. They started out very well going up 2:0 as they were anchored by Mads Ditlevsen and Tom Van Walle (26-24 and 25-20) before the Turks fought back in set 3 with Nikola Gjorgiev on fire (22-25). ANTWERP eventually scored a 3:1 win (25-17) to call for the golden set. The Belgians went up 10:8 there but eventually could not bring it home as ANKARA cruised to the final 14-16.
“I think we made the difference with our service” said a happy mentor of Maliye Milli Piyango, Josko Milenkoski. “This is a historic night for our club because we have never gone so far in the European Cups”.

“What can I say after such a game?” asks Belgian setter Dirk-Jan Van Gendt. “Both teams were equally strong but in the end they had a bit more of luck”.
