Cuba (3-0 overall) emerged victorious from a thrilling semifinal against Turkey (1-2) to secure a face-off with Slovenia in a do-or-die match, whose winners will have a guaranteed spot in the next year’s FIVB Nations League.
Steered by Jesús Herrera, who scored 27 points, Cuba beat Turkey in 5 sets, partially 22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 20-25, and 15-12. Adis Lagumdžija scored 22 points for Turkey, while Oğuzhan Karasu made 4 kill blocks and Burutay Subaşı served 4 aces.
After losing the first set, the hosts Slovenia (3-0) recovered and beat Belarus (1-2) in the other semifinal: 3-1 (21-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-18). Belarus was deprived of the help from their top-scorer in the tournament Radzivon Miskevich who sustained a knee injury in the last game of a pool stage against Cuba.
Tonček Štern was the main man for Slovenia today as he tallied 18 points. Jan Kozamernik set up 4 kill blocks. Pavel Kuklinski scored 21 points for Belarus.
