VNL M: Blengini rejuvenates national team for Nations League - no Zaytsev, Juantorena…

Gianlorenzo Blengini, the head coach of Italy Men’s Volleyball National Team, has announced the preliminary list of players for the 2019 FIVB Nations League.


The list consists of 30 players and will be reduced to 25 players on May 21 according to the FIVB regulations. For each weekend, Blengini will choose 14 players.

At a press conference, during which he revealed his list, Blengini explained that he decided to give room to numerous young players and grant the rest to several players who have played a lot for clubs and internationally in the last few years, like Ivan Zaytsev, Osmany Juantorena, Salvatore Rossini, Filippo Lanza, etc. Blengini also summoned for the Nations League some players who compete in the country’s Division 2.

Here is the list:

Setters: Simone Giannelli (Itas Trentino), Luca Spirito (Calzedonia Verona), Riccardo Sbertoli (Revivre Axopower Milano), Nicola Salsi (Aeronautica Militare Club Italia CRAI, Division 2).

Middle blockers: Matteo Piano (Revivre Axopower Milano), Simone Anzani (Azimut Leo Shoes Modena), Daniele Mazzone (Azimut Leo Shoes Modena), Roberto Russo (Consar Ravenna), Davide Candellaro (Itas Trentino), Alberto Polo (Kioene Padova), Fabio Ricci (Sir Safety Conad Perugia), Edoardo Caneschi (Globo Banca Popolare del Frusinate Sora).

Liberos: Fabio Balaso (Cucine Lube Civitanova), Nicola Pesaresi (Revivre Axopower Milano), Federico Bonami (Globo Banca Popolare del Frusinate Sora), Filippo Federici (Aeronautica Militare Club Italia CRAI, Division 2).

Outside hitters: Oleg Antonov (Galatasaray, TUR), Giacomo Raffaelli (Consar Ravenna), Daniele Lavia (Consar Ravenna), Oreste Cavuto (Itas Trentino), Davide Gardini (Brigham Young University Cougars, USA), Marco Pierotti (Azimut Leo Shoes Modena), Fabrizio Gironi (Revivre Axopower Milano), Francesco Recine (Aeronautica Militare Club Italia CRAI, Division 2), Sebastiano Milan (Centrale Del Latte Sferc Brescia, Division 2).

Opposite hitters: Gabriele Nelli (Itas Trentino), Andrea Argenta (Consar Ravenna), Giulio Pinali (Azimut Leo Shoes Modena), Yuri Romanò (Olimpia Bergamo, Division 2), Diego Cantagalli (Cucine Lube Civitanova).

One of the best opposite hitters in the world right now. Trentino will have a hell of the power when it comes to finish the ball but will definetely struggle to receive it. Both Lucarelli and Kooy are easy targets to aim and were usually hidden behind a libero. Still seems like there will be top 3 clubs in Italy next season: Lube, Perugia, Trentino. Modena will be weaker for sure and will struggle to be in the top 6 and Piacenza may make a surprise. Reply

ITA M: Trentino sign newly proclaimed Italy National Team member Kooy

Dick Kooy is a really solid player who has been very consistent in his pro career. Gaining him and Rossini are very very good Italian additions. That being said the loss of Grebennikov, Russell and Kovacevic will be significant.
Ultimately I will cheer for a healthy uninterrupted A1 season....fans or no fans....We need to play volleyball!!! Reply
