In their quest to regain hegemony in the Superliga Masculina, the six-time champions Cruzeiro faced tough rivals in the opening round of the 2019/20 season. Ribeirão took the first set, which lasted for as many as 40 minutes, but their willingness to overcome the powerhouse has vanished in the continuation of the match: 3-1 (28-30, 25-21, 25-16, 25-14). Canadian John Gordon Perrin and Isaac Santos top-scored for Cruzeiro with 13 points apiece, while Vítor Baesso made 16 points for the losing side. Cruzeiro set up 17 kill blocks in today’s encounter!
No matter the fact that it is considered one of the top-level leagues in the world, with so many world volleyball stars playing in it and valuable contracts signed, major failures happen even to the Brazilian Superliga. Only four days prior to the start of the competition, one team withdrew from participating and had to be replaced in a short notice. Botafogo were officially unable to fulfill financial requirements so Ponta Grossa Vôlei, who was relegated last season, stepped in. Because they had little time to prepare for their first-round match against Sesi-SP, it was postponed for November 28. Ponta Grossa will make their debut this season against EMS Taubaté Funvic on November 17.
