NORCECA M: Brazil open with victory in U-23 Men’s Pan Am Cup

The South American sides of Brazil and Argentina scored straight-set victories over NORCECA representatives from Dominican Republic and Mexico in the second day of action of the U-23 Men’s Pan American Cup at Langley Sport Centre on Wednesday. It was the second win for Argentina while the Brazilian side was making its first outing in the competition.

Thursday’s schedule in the five-team tournament features the South American duel between Argentina and Brazil while hosts Canada meet Dominican Republic.

Brazil 3, Dominican Republic 0
The Brazilian team debuted with a straight sets victory (25-20, 25-20 y 25-13) over Dominican Republic who dropped to a win-loss 0-2 record. Henrique Batagim was the best scorer for the South Americans with a total of 13 points, while Dominican Pedro Luis García finished with 14. Brazilian Flavio Gualberto and Dominican Kelvin Campechano each finished with four blocks.

“We had a very well balanced game tonight, but we still can improve,” Brazil’s Coach Leonardo Carvalho said. “The Dominican team played much better than in their first match against Argentina, obviously they had a long trip.”

Argentina defeated Mexico in straight sets (25-16, 25-23, 25-11) to open the second day of action.Gonzalo Lapera registered a total of 21 points for Argentina, while Mexico’s captain Mauricio Lopez was the top scorer for the defeated side with 8 tallies.

Gonzalo Quiroga, the captain of Argentina, stated that even though he could not play after pulling a muscle, everything worked as expected.
“We got a good victory against a good team that showed a great level in their first match (against Canada), but we did what we had to do and our staff also did a great scouting job,” he said.
