WCHU23 W: First tournament in Tijuana and Mexicali

The inaugural FIVB Women’s U23 World Championship will take place in the cities of Tijuana and Mexicali from October 5-12.

The official announcement was made on Friday by Saul Castro Verdugo, president of the local organizing committee and FIVB Executive Vice President, accompanied by several private and official sports authorities of the State of Baja California

Twelve countries are set to compete divided in two pools of six teams each with the sets of the matches to be contested up to 21 points with a two-point difference. 

Pool A consists of Mexico, Japan, Italy, Dominican Republic, Russia and Argentina while United States, Turkey, Brazil, China, Cuba and Kenya will compete in Pool B.

Originally two teams from Africa were among those twelve teams with spots to play in the event but then Algeria withdrew and Russia took its place.

The teams are scheduled to arrive on October 3 preceded by the members of the FIVB Control Committee members as well as the International Referees. The competition will be played at the High Performance Center Gymnasium in Tijuana and at the State Auditorium in Mexicali. 

The press conference was attended by Lizbeth Mata Lozano, president of the youth and sports commission of the Baja California State Congress, Yolanda Garcia, director of the Tijuana municipality sports institute, and Alberto Arreola, member of the FIVB and NORCECA finance commissions.
