The opening match of the World Champs qualifier taking place throughout this weekend in Poprad was attended by a very special guest: Slovakia’s Head of State Ivan Gašparovic. He was among the many fans who cheered on the home heroes as they beat Greece in straight sets to start their quest for a ticket to the Final Round of the World Championship on a high note.

“We are evidently pleased that our President visited the match” says the President of the Slovak Volleyball Federation Lubor Halanda. “This is good for the image of our sport and also shows the importance of this tournament” Halanda, who is a member of the CEV Board of Administration, says. “He really enjoyed the game and we have been talking about Volleyball for most of the time.”

After the match, Gašparovic came down to the court to talk with CEV Vice President Jan Hronek – who is also the CEV Technical Delegate at the tournament – as well as with the players of the national team and their Italian-born head coach Flavio Gulinelli. “He wanted to meet our players and coach and share his congratulations on their victory” Halanda says. “He is a sports fan and he was absolutely fine here at the Arena. He also wished our team much success for the remainder of the tournament.”
