Hosts Vietnam, making their debut effort in the AVC Cup for Men, performed superbly in the close first set. Australia, whose height average is 199cm against the Vietnamese’s 184cm, failed to use their height advantage in attacking and blocking when Vietnam, powered by terrific Bui Van Hai, counter-attacked well to push the visitors to the limit. Vietnam took the opener 25-23.

Conceding one set, Australia, the young team in a long-term preparation for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games whose three players have already experienced the last month’s London Olympics, struck back in the second set. Luke Smith proved his talent by attacking from all corners to help Australia win the second set 25-21.

However, Vietnam were in their top form on Thursday. They mixed the excellent offensive combination of Bui Van Hai’s spectacular attacks and solid blocking from Pham Thai Hung and Bui Van Hai to capture the remaining two sets 25-21 25-21 and the stunning 3-1 victory over Australia.

Bui Van Hai scored a match-high 27 points including 23 kills and four blockings, while Luke Smith led Australia with the highest 25 points.

With the victory, Vietnam set up a rematch with Korea in the 5th-6th playoff, while Australia and Myanmar will fight it out in the 7th-8th playoff.
