Four players of Cuban Men’s National Team – Alfonso Gavilán, Ricardo Calvó, Osmany Uriarte and Rolando Cepeda were sentenced to five years in prison, while a fifth player, Luis Sosa, was sentenced to three and a half years. In addition, they all had to pay 24,000 euros in compensation to the victim. All five were found guilty of rape which took place in July 2016 at a hotel in Tampere, Finland, where Cuban NT was staying for the 2016 FIVB World League tournament.

But, according to the information of the Greek “SDNA”, the case got an unexpected turnover as the victim changed her testimony which will lead to reopening a trial. So, the Cubans now hope they might be released.

It might happen that five Cuban players act against the women that accused them of rape because they spent eight and a half months in prison and their reputation has been corrupted. Also, because of being accused, they all lost lucrative contracts of hundreds of thousands of euros.
