The final four of Poland’s national cup took place this past weekend in Rzeszow and there PGE Skra first edged the local heroes of Asseco Resovia in the semifinals (3:1) with Mariusz Wlazly winning the much awaited duel with another great opposite player, Georg Grozer.
With this win PGE Skra crashed the hopes of some 4’000 fans while in the second semifinal JASTRZEBSKI beat Poland’s second representative in this year’s Champions League, Zaksa KEDZIERZYN-KOZLE (3:2).
PGE Skra displayed a perfect performance in the final thereby taking the trophy for the sixth time in the last 8 years and 80’000 euros prize money.
The players from Belchatow almost swept all individual awards with Miguel Angel Falasca being voted MVP and Best Setter, Michal Winiarski taking the prize for the Best Receiver, while Pawel Zatorski and Mariusz Wlazly were honored as Best Digger and Best Server respectively. Only Italian, but Polish-born Michal Lasko from JASTRZEBSKI Wegiel avoided the clean sweep of all individual awards being chosen as Best Spiker of the event.
“I am more than happy as this is probably the greatest success in my career” says head coach Jacek Nawrocki, who has been with the team since 2001 and at the helm of the group since 2009.
“This was one of the most difficult competitions as all teams dream about participating in the Champions League and they all have great quality” he adds.
