Ankara, Turkey, December 12, 2011. Turkey is about to vote for the “2011 Athlete of the Year” via a special polling which has been promoted, for the past 57 years, by one of the country’s major daily newspapers, Milliyet. Volleyball players or teams are included in the nominees picked out for four out of the five categories to vote for and this evidently shows the increasing popularity and importance of that sport in Turkey.

The Turkish Volleyball Federation is calling on all Volleyball fans to cast their votes and help the sport get one or more awards.

Volleyball enthusiasts from abroad can also participate in the polling by casting their votes.

The nominees are: Neslihan Darnel (Best Scorer from the 2011 CEV Volleyball European Championship); Giovanni Guidetti (head coach of Vakifbank TTelekom ISTANBUL) and Sahin Catma (head coach of the girls’ youth national team); the teams of Vakifbank TTelekom ISTANBUL (winner of the 2011 CEV Volleyball Champions League – Women) and Turkey’s girls’ youth national team (2011 European and World champions); Süleyman Kalkan (General Manager of Vakifbank TTelekom ISTANBUL) and Mr. Erol U. Karabiyik (President of the Turkish Volleyball Federation).
