What a scene in the award ceremony at the 2019 FIVB Men’s Volleyball Club World Championship! Brazilian Bruno Rezende “Bruninho“ refused to receive the trophy for the Most Valuable Player and handed it to a teammate Yoandy Leal.

In a gesture that will be remembered for a long time, the setter Bruninho refused to receive the MVP award at the 2019 Club World Championship and handed it to a teammate from the club and also a national team, Yoandy Leal. Thus, the winners Cucine Lube Civitanova had five instead of four representatives in the award ceremony.

Bruninho was chosen the best in his position but when he was about to be awarded MVP, he called Leal to join him and all the other players chosen to the Dream Team. Cuban-born approached but was obviously confused before Bruninho handed him the statuette.

Perhaps what will most be remembered is how Leal was snubbed of an award he rightly deserved. That was shameful. No idea why the prejudice against such a deserving player. Lube would not have w on this without Leal.

Whether Leal deserved MVP award or not that is a different discussion. Don’t take me wrong, he is a great player. But I am not sure how Bruno got the idea that he has the right to bypass the FIVB process and voting committee and give award he was given to someone else. This is a scandal and he should be punished for this behavior.

If the process is obviously corrupted then it should be bypassed – FiVB should be objective, in this case they were not. Leal’s deserving of the award IS the point, otherwise what is? And I doubt anyone would call FIVB shenanigans a ‘process’ LOL. They were clearly wrong and deserved to be called out for it. Why should Leal suffer the prejudice.

Re: @Agguerro Because this will lead to anarchy where individual players are deciding who deserves an award. No one is always right, and we all know that FIVB is more wrong than right. But it is FIVB competition and they make or change a rule as they see it fit. Like reducing number of participants to 4 this year. Or awarding the best setter and MVP award to the same person although in the past those two awards were intentionally given to two different players?
Did you ever wonder why Perugia and Trentino, last year champion, don’t participate anymore? Because they don’t want to be part of this nonsense competition that doesn’t mean anything. But if Lube accepted to be part of, then they should follow the rules they accepted.
