Ali Shafiei was about to write history in the French Men’s Volleyball but, as it seems, it will not happen.

The 27-year-old middle blocker Shafiei (12 caps for Iran National Team) should have been the first Iranian player to compete in the French male Volleyball League as he made an agreement to join Poitiers for the 2019/20 season. But, according to the club President Claude Berrard, the transfer was stopped by the athlete’s country high instances.

“We received an official letter telling us that he is not allowed to leave Iran since this country declared a state of war,” Berrard explained for La Nouvelle République.

The United States blamed Iran for attacking two of its oil tankers in the Middle Eastern waterway at the end of June which raised already flammable tensions between these two countries that affected Volleyball as well.

Poitiers, two-time French champions and Cup winners, will seek justice in front of an International Volleyball Federation (FIVB).

“He signed a contract with us. We demand compensation and we have asked for it. We will also check that he plays in Iran and that he does not move to another country. If this is not the case, we will oppose it. This situation is damaging for us because he is a very good player,” the head of Poitiers stated.

Last season, Shafiei played for Saipa Tehran and became the Iranian Championship runner-up with the club.

FIVB releases COVID-19 guidelines for restart of volleyball activities

At last the guidelines on Covid-19, from a top governing volleyball body.... I appreciate them. It is a progress. Some of recommendations are general, some specific for volleybal. It seems to be the soft legal instrument. Nevertheless they could assist to national VFs… Majority of recommendations are reasonable, some of them should not be a problem to kept, some will need a much bigger effort to be kept, some should be included yet. For this goal, there should be obtained a support (best voluntary) and discipline from athletes, coaches, officials, referees , medical staff, club owners, fans etc - realised what is in a stake… Media will have an important role in that..
For implementing of these measures there should be probably prepared also some Roadmap.. Perhaps it would be a suitable to consider the responsibility for pertinent officials, positions, and how to enforce crucial measures, recommendations, specified for this sport - if the situation would be worsen ....
We can hope , that these epidemiological preventive measures will be only temporary and volleyball will return soon to halls, and fans could see their teams personally.
