Exactly one year before the opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games (July 24, 2020), the organizers have presented medals that will be awarded in the event.

One year before the grand opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the organizers revealed how the medals will look like. But, the point is not in the appearance of medals but in the way they were made – by the recycling!

Prior to presenting medals, the organizers started the “Tokyo 2020 Medal Project“ in which they called citizens of Japan to donate small electronic devices, which they no longer use, with a purpose to craft both Olympic and Paralympic medals out of their parts.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics organizers collected nearly 80,000 tons of mobile phones and small electronic devices around the country. That was reduced down to approximately 32 kilograms of gold, 3,450 kilograms of silver, and 2,200 kilograms of bronze. It is expected that roughly 5,000 medals will be given out in the event. After processing the material, the Olympic medal designer Junichi Kawanishi, who won the competition that attracted more than 400 entries, designed them into what we see now.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) regulations say that obverse of the medal design must include these elements:

  • Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, in front of the Panathinaikos Stadium
  • The official name of the respective Games
  • The Olympic 5 rings symbol

“The design of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic medals reflects the concept that in order to achieve glory, athletes have to strive for victory on a daily basis. The medals resemble rough stones that have been polished and which now shine, with ’light’ and ’brilliance’ their overall themes. The medals collect and reflect myriad patterns of light, symbolizing the energy of the athletes and those who support them; their design is intended to symbolize diversity and represent a world where people who compete in sports and work hard are honored. The brilliance of the medals’ reflections signifies the warm glow of friendship depicted by people all over the world holding hands,“ the 2020 Tokyo Olympics website published.
