The top-seed Sporting, who activated their volleyball section last summer after 22 years, prevailed in an exhausting series of the 2017/18 I Divisão playoff finals against No.2 Benfica by clinching Game 5.

Led by 3,000 fans in the packed João Rocha Pavilion, Sporting prevailed in the tie-break over defending champions, partially 3-2 (25-19, 19-25, 25-22, 25-16, 16-14).

Sporting hired some respectable names of the world volleyball that led them to this success such as veteran Cuban opposite with Italian citizenship Ángel Dennis and Colombian outside hitter Liberman Agámez. Sporting also have one of the oldest professional players in the world at the moment. Actually, the oldest one until recently.
