Thirty-one year old middle blocker Tomas Siroky only had a half-professional contract a year ago. He nevertheless could win the Czech national league together with VK OSTRAVA thereby getting the right to compete in the 2014 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League and he also played with the Czech national team in the 2013 edition of the CEV Volleyball European League. Right now he has turned into the major star of VK OSTRAVA that on Tuesday will debut in Europe’s elite club competition playing Greece’s Olympiacos PIRAEUS.

It has been a fantastic year and we are just about to debut in the Champions LeagueSiroky says. “I just want to enjoy this experience. We have another good middle blocker, Michal Cechmanek, who has moved to Ostrava after playing in Zlin last year”. Siroky is very careful when talking about the expectations of his team. “We know we are very inexperienced in comparison with other teams. Our team is very young and quite surprisingly I am the only player above thirty years of age. We are going to compensate for this lack of experience with our enthusiasm and fighting spirit. These were our biggest weapons last year together with Peter Michalovic who played for us in the Playoffs.”

The Slovak opposite has moved to Italy to play there for Andreoli LATINA. “It is a pity that we play Olympiacos right for our first home game. This is an opponent that we would like to beat. The season just got started and we still need to identify the player that will be filling the gap left by Peter. However, I believe that our sports hall will be full and our fans will help usSiroky adds.

VK OSTRAVA just lost their opening match in the national league though their performance was quite good. “Unfortunately we have three players who are injured and also Swedish spiker Erik Sundberg won’t be able to play with Olympiacos” concludes Czech mentor Zdenek Smejkal.
