Nigeria’s Mercy Promise topped the scorers with a tournament high of 25 points while Merwa Dallal Achour scored 16 points for the winners.
A 26-24 set win in the beginning of the match gave Nigeria enough confidence to continue their run in the second period. However, a 2-0 lead was not sufficient for the team of coach Sergey Ovechkin. On Algeria’s side, Celia Bourihane (13 points) came in for Louiza Bayou to help her teammates turning the tables in the third set. Nigeria now acted too franticly while Algeria kept cool in the decisive moments of the match. Consequently, the tiebreak was an all-Algerian affair (15-7), offering the North Africans their first win at Women’s U20 World Champs.
