The countdown has started for Turkey’s juniors who this week are set to compete in a second-round qualifier where a ticket for the 2012 CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship scheduled for late August in Poland and Denmark will be at stake. The tournament will start tomorrow and is set to take place in the splendid “Baskent” sports hall owned by the Turkish Volleyball Federation in Ankara. With only a couple of days to go for the opening match, head coach Veljko Basic and outside hitter Yigit Gülmezoglu were invited to share their expectations and feelings by Maxfm, one of the most popular radio stations there in Ankara that is also sponsoring the upcoming qualifier.

Yigit Gülmezoglu, who is not just a promising Volleyball player but also an outstanding student in his native Izmir, said: “I feel like our group has turned into a real family since we are all very close friends. In my opinion we are ready to stand any challenge and I assume our match with Germany will be like a final whose winner will finally seize that much desired ticket to make it to the final round of the European Championship. We have played some friendly matches against Greece and there we have showed our great potential. We are capable of edging any opponent as long as we play in front of packed stands”.

Head coach Veljko Basic expressed his love for Turkey, a country where he has been working for some years now and he even surprised the listeners by addressing some words in the local idiom.

A native of Bosnia and Herzegovina who has spent quite many years in France, Basic stated about the upcoming tournament: “Our preparations went well and we hope to go for a good result as we have got together a group of very talented athletes. We have to stand the fierce opposition that will be brought by strong sides like Germany and Slovakia and in order to achieve our goals we need the full support of our home fans here in Ankara”.
