Héctor ‘Picky’ Soto, one of the most prominent Men’s players in the history of Puerto Rican volleyball, has retired after 21 years of competing professionally.

Although he trained with the club in his homeland Capitanes de Arecibo, getting ready for the next season, Soto decided to retire at the age of 39. Last season, he won the national title with Mets de Guaynabo.

The opposite Soto made his professional debut in the jersey of Bucaneros de Arroyo, a club from his hometown, in the top division Liga de Voleibol Superior Masculino (LVSM), at the age of 16. The same year, he was on the roster of the Puerto Rican U19 NT in the FIVB World Championship in his homeland and has served on three positions in the tournament – as the middle blocker, receiver, and opposite.

Afterwards, Soto had studied in the USA, being awarded in the ideal lineup of the NCAA Tournament (AVCA Division I First Team All-American) twice while playing for the Indiana University-Purdue University.

With the Puerto Rican Senior NT, Soto won three gold medals in a row in the Central American Championship (from 2002 to 2010) and became the Best Scorer of the 2006 FIVB World Championship and 2007 FIVB World Cup.

On a club level, he won national Championship of Puerto Rico four times: with the Caribes de San Sebastián (1999), Capitanes de Arecibo (2013 and 2014) and Mets de Guaynabo (2017).

In addition, Soto has grabbed the trophy in the Belgian Championship and Cup once each with Noliko Maaseik in his only season there (2001/2002), which was only one of several various medals on his account that he took in the clubs abroad: CS Sfaxien (Tunisia, 2001/2002), Cagliari Volley (Italy, Division 2 and Serie A1, 2002-2006), Panasonic Panthers (Japan, 2006/2007), Lokomotiv Novosibirsk (Russia, 2007-2009), Arkas Spor İzmir (Turkey, 2009/2010) and Hyundai Capital Skywalkers (Korea, 2010/2011).
