Slovenia opened Friday’s program by cruising past Ukraine 3:1 (24-26, 25-17, 25-22, and 25-13) to redeem for yesterday’s defeat to group favorite Russia. David Kumer registered 24 points for the winning side well supported by Ziga Donik with 13 and Sergej Drobnic with 11. Stanislav Azarov and Andriy Marynchenko paced Ukraine with 11 and 10 points respectively.
“We want to make it to the final round and therefore my players were extremely nervous as they debuted against Russia on Thursday” said Slovenia’s head coach Iztok Ksela after the game. “We were leading 24:22 in the first set but once again my players felt the pressure and they eventually ended up losing this set. However, they regrouped and played much better in the remainder of the match. We prepare very carefully for each game by analyzing and scouting our opponents and I think this has helped us today”.
