Slobodan Kovač gave the interview to the Polish website Przegląd Sportowy in which he explained the reasons for a failure of Serbia to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but revealed he’ll stay at the helm of the national team.

“We didn’t come to the qualifying tournament in Berlin in good form. My key players struggled with health problems. Uroš Kovačević didn’t play in the next two matches in Serie A after the tournament, Nemanja Petrić and Aleksandar Atanasijević had similar problems. We started preparations for the tournament in Berlin in full force only on December 27 because the day before, 7 of my players were still playing Serie A. Already on January 3 we went to Berlin, so there was very little time to prepare. In clubs, players work with other fitness trainers, have other coaches, so no wonder they lost the habit to work with me and in my game system. This is a normal situation. The fact that we started all group stage matches between 13:30 and 14:30 also didn’t help because it makes it difficult to have even a decent morning start. Mentally, we didn’t start those matches well,“ Kovač stated.

However, the Serbian Federation didn’t want to make radical moves and left Kovač at the helm of the national team until today. The fact that he took over the squad less than a month before the 2019 EuroVolley and led Serbia to the title certainly gave him some credit.

“Yes. My contract came to an end after the Olympic qualifications, but I talked to our federation President Zoran Gajić and he said that he wanted me to continue this project,“ current head coach of the Polish side Jastrzębski Węgiel stressed.
