The IRIVF’s Board of Directors reached a joint agreement to appoint the Russian expert Alekno as a new head coach of its men’s national team. Thus, the governing body for volleyball in this Asian country made the media revelation official.
The 2012 London Olympics winner as a head coach of the Russia Men’s National Team won the ‘battle’ for the job in Iran in which IRIVF included four more world’s prominent experts. Alekno will lead the Iran Men at the 2021 FIVB Volleyball Nations League and 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. The 53-year-old coach will replace Montenegrin Igor Kolaković, who parted ways with IRIVF in March.
The Iranian team is considered a giant in the continent with 17 medals on its account in events in Asia (8 gold medals) but it has only one medal in major international tournaments (bronze medal at the 2017 World Grand Champions Cup). Alekno’s task will be to improve the latter.
