It won’t be the same without them – Players who retired from NT after Rio Olympics

Olympic Games are great opportunity for experienced players to say goodbye to their national teams in style. If they do it with a medal around their neck, it’s even better.

Rio

The 2016 Rio Olympics marked the end of a volleyball career in the national team of many famous players without whom every tournament that comes next will be much emptier.

Do you remember the article where we presented the oldest male players at Rio Olympics? Three of them decided to retire from their national teams! As for the oldest female players in Rio, only one said goodbye.

Before Rio Olympics, Sérgio Dutra Santos ‘Serginho’ announced he will stop wearing yellow jersey of Brazil upon its end and he fulfilled his promise. But he did it in style, by winning his second Olympic title and MVP award!

Sergey Tetyukhin was hoping he will manage to go into volleyball history with a gold medal as well, or any medal at all, but failed. He said it was over and will remain with ‘only’ one Olympic gold medal, four medals overall.

American Reid Priddy took his third Olympic medal, second bronze (has one gold) before retiring.

In Women’s competition, from the list of the oldest players in Rio, only Puerto Rican Áurea Cruz decided to retire from her NT.

Besides her, two Brazilian stars who certainly could play many more years on a high level surprisingly retired – Sheilla Castro and Fabiana Claudino. Both already won two Olympic gold medals.

In addition to this, we will mention several players who have second thoughts on retiring from their national teams – David Lee (USA), Antonella Del Core (Italy), Jaqueline Carvalho and Thaísa Daher (both Brazil).

Can anyone tells me will Jelena Nikolic now retire from NT? She is old and it’s time to say goodbye! She even didn’t play in Rio!

@Maine Maybe she has some years, but she is still the best receiver in Serbian NT!

@Axe OK I agree, but she didn’t play when her team needed…For me this is the best way to say goodbye!

What a pity! Fabiana was the best middle blocker I’ve seen play… Her ‘China’ is virtually indefensible…It’s hard to find other middle blocker that coordenates block and attacks as Fabiana played!!! I know Thaisa, Rasic, Adams and Akirandewo are on the top today… But Fabiana is spetacular!!

I can’t imagine how will be Brazil Nation Team without Fabiana. She is one of best middle blockers of the World.

Wow… Fabiana and Thaisa were the best duo of middle blockers in the world for many, many years… These players were the safety ball of Brazil National team… With the Fabiana’s retirement, I believe that USA NT has the most powerful middle blockers… Akirandewo and Adams are really great!!!!
