Just after the police and local authorities confirmed the tragic news of the death of former Dutch international player Ingrid Visser and of her partner, Lodewijk Severein, the Spanish Volleyball family joined in a collective grief for the fatal outcome of the incident. Players, clubs and fans have taken it to the social media to mourn the decease of the player who registered 514 caps with the Dutch national team throughout her career spanning from 1994 to 2011.

The President of the Royal Spanish Volleyball Federation and CEV Vice President, Agustin Martin Santos, expressed his affliction for the news: “I am extremely saddened by the death of Ingrid Visser and her partner. It’s the worst news we could have received, and the confirmation of this information fills us with sorrow. On behalf of the entire Spanish Volleyball family and on my own behalf, I send the deepest condolences to the two families and to our friends of Dutch Volleyball on this sad day”.

Meanwhile, Spanish women’s national coach, Francisco Hervás, showed his disbelief by the news, “It is incomprehensible (the death) of Visser. Her loss will be highly lamented and I hope the perpetrators will pay for it” he tweeted on his account.

Especially emotive were the messages sent by Ingrid Visser’s former teammates. The Dutch middle blocker played for nine seasons in the Spanish league, namely for the teams of Hotel Cantur, CV Tenerife and CAV Murcia 2005, clubs in which she left an extraordinary memory for her sympathy and her affection. The players who shared the dressing room with Visser have also taken to the social media with multiple messages of sorrow. Marisa Fernandez, Diana Sanchez, Rebeca Serrano, or Diana Castaño, are some of the teammates who have expressed their sadness for the loss.

What a sad day … I have not felt so sad in such a long time… A sadness that comes from within, a sadness that is heart-breaking” said Marisa Fernandez. “We will not forget you, Ingrid! Rest in peace,” said Serrano, who together with Visser was part of the legendary and multi-champion team of CV Tenerife. The captain of that CV Tenerife, Goya Dorta, told the local press: “I can’t believe what happened. I thought this would turn out differently. She was a beloved teammate and a great friend of mine so I feel really sad” the former player said. Pictures of the Dutch player now populate social media profiles of many who shared with her joys and efforts. Also moving are the messages of head coaches who worked with the Dutch player in the Spanish clubs where she played at, as well as the condolences from the players who did see her from the other side of the net. “Ingrid Visser, from heaven, take care of all of us, your Volleyball family” the mythical Leyla Chihuan tweeted.

In addition to this, virtually all Volleyball clubs in the country have voiced their regret, through messages or texts on their social media accounts.
