The return of Maja Ognjenović to the Serbia Women’s Volleyball National Team would surely lure smiles to the faces of the fans in the nation. The legendary setter left this option wide open…
The presence of Ognjenović in Serbia for the classic end-of-year toast organized by the federation (OSS), during which the best players of 2022 were awarded, has given rise to speculation on the possibility of a return to the national team for a 38-year-old setter, who skipped the last international season entirely. After all, it was the federal press office itself that asked her the question about her future, to which Ognjenović replied as follows: “I’m thinking about it, but it’s still early to make a decision. It depends on many things… including my choice to continue playing! My contract with (Turkey’s) Eczacıbaşı expires at the end of the year, so it depends on the offers I get.”
The path for Ognjenović’s return could be paved by the arrival of Giovanni Guidetti on the bench of the reigning world champion national team. The two have already had a fruitful collaboration at the time of Turkey’s VakıfBank. Ognjenović is a synonym for all major successes of the Serbia Women in the last decade: the four-time Best Setter of EuroVolley was involved in their FIVB World Championship title in 2018, as well as in the CEV European Championship titles in 2011 and 2019.
