After they lost their main sponsor „Lotos“, the Polish powerhouse Trefl was close to shutting down. But, the fans took part in the crowdfunding campaign and collected the amount of money that was necessary for the club’s survival. Besides the fans, some former players of Trefl donated money, like Wojciech Żaliński. Furthermore, some players who have never played in the club took part in the campaign, such as Karol Kłos and Łukasz Żygadło. Even a footballer Sebastian Mila donated money. Now, Trefl officials set the new goal – to collect 400,000 zlote (93,000 euros).
„We survived with the help of the company ‘Trefl’, the city of Gdańsk, small companies, but also the fans. The budget is not yet fully balanced. There is a deficit, but it is at an acceptable level,” admitted Roman Szczepan Kniter, head of company “Trefl” who co-owns the club.
Despite the fact that Andrea Anastasi, the coach of Trefl, stated that there will be no salary reductions for the players and members of the staff, it was inevitable.
“Respect for the players who have made some concessions. None of them left the club and did not say that he wants to leave,” said Dariusz Gadomski, Trefl President, and thanked Anastasi who talked to the players and asked them to be patient.
