Many people will say that Japan made a surprise today by beating Russia. No one won’t say that Japan is completely different team when they’re playing in front of home crowd.

Japan coach Masayoshi Manabe:

I’m very glad to win the first game of this World Grand Prix. Today, we concentrated on receiving and tried to attack down the middle. We had a bit of a hard time in the first set but our substitutes came on and played very well.”

Japan captain Saori Kimura:

It was our first game in Japan and I desperately wanted to win it, so I’m very happy. Russia made many mistakes and that helped us.”

Russia captain Ekaterina Kosianenko:

Congratulations to Japan; they played well. For us, of course, we were tired after a difficult flight, but that’s not our main excuse for losing. The main reason is that we didn’t fulfil all the tasks that our head coach told us to do.”

Russia coach Yury Marichev:

I want to congratulate the Japan team; they played very well while we made many mistakes in attack, serve, block, everything. It wasn’t a good day.”
