The Italian men’s volleyball Championship is by the opinions of the vast majority of experts the most attractive and strongest national club competition in the world. Two nations outside of Italian dominate for the number of players competing in this tournament – Cuban and French.

SuperLega, considered as the highest-level national club competition in the world by many, has been packed with foreign players for many years. That’s how it will be in 2020/21, too. There are two nations that are leveled in dominating in regard to this – Cuban and French with nine players each.

In the case of Cuba, this number of players, counting all that are born there regardless of wearing jerseys of other national teams, is the highest this century. It surpassed the number of Cubans from last year by one. It’s worth noting that in the 1999/00 season, 11 players originating in this Caribbean nation contested in SuperLega, which is an absolute record.

This is good news for Cuban fans given that more and more players building their careers abroad are reaching agreements with the country’s volleyball federation on returning to the national team. Playing in Italy will make them, or at least those who didn’t change the sports nationality, better players not only for themselves but also for representing their country at major events in the near future.

The Cuba-born players in the 2020/21 SuperLega: Yoandy Leal, Robertlandy Simón, Osmany Juantorena, Marlon Yant (all in Cucine Lube Civitanova), Wilfredo León (Sir Safety Conad Perugia), Luis Sosa (Itas Trentino), Raydel Hierrezuelo (Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza), Elian Estrada (Leo Shoes Modena), and Alejandro Ramírez (Vero Volley Monza).
